Chamber Music Concerts in Brightlingsea
Chamber music concerts have taken place monthly at The Studio for the past seventeen years. Next season, 2008 - 2009 will be our eighteenth season. The intimate nature of the performing space and the studio’s location in a garden and field on the edge of Brightlingsea Creek make for an unusual and attractive setting that is particularly suitable for the enjoyment of music of this nature. We have been especially fortunate in the very high quality of those musicians who have played here and who have subsequently brought other colleagues with them on their return visits. The list of past and current performers on our programme for 2008- 2009 will give some indication of how lucky we have been.
The ‘Friends of Studio Music’ club was formed to allow performances to take place within the constraints of local planning permission. Those persons wishing to try the experience can attend a first concert and be signed in by a member. Thereafter a small membership fee is required. Studio Music receives no subsidies or grants from outside bodies and exists solely on membership fees, ticket prices and small donations from its members. We derive a certain satisfaction from having survived in this manner for the past sixteen years.
Concerts take place in an artist’s studio on two levels that is rearranged each month for the performances. Simple broadsheet programmes are provided free of charge, as is the coffee which is served at the end of the concerts. We have no licence to sell alcohol but members are welcome to bring wine or other drinks to consume during the concerts. (We provide wine glasses and corkscrews.) The level of concentration by audiences during performances has always been a feature of our concerts, and is one which has always impressed the performers.
Colin Kirby-Green has been artistic director of Studio Music since its conception and has been greatly assisted by Jan Oliver in all matters relating to membership and ticket sales. In addition, much help is given by certain members for the preparation of the performance space and during the concerts.
